In 1794 he lived and worked as mechanic and watchmaker in Ludwigsburg Circa 1800 Johann Georg moved to Öhringen, where he held a position as mechanic to the court of the Prince of Hohenlohe-Oehringen. Now the timepiece is back in its original format as a table chronometer with the bezel in its original position. This experimental chronometer is illustrated and described in: Hans von Bertele "Marine- und Taschenchronometer", Munich 1981, page 207 and in Fritz von Osterhausen "Über Tischchronometer" Part 1 in "Uhren-Journal für Sammler klassischer Zeitmesser", Oct./Nov. 1992, p. 17f. In 1870 this chronometer was tested at the Neuchâtel observatory, where it finished in 6th place (128 participants) in the category "Chronomètres de Poche". The chronometers were observed for 1 month in 2 positions and in the oven - with extract from the chronometer archives by Andreas Hidding Movm. From 1824 until 1830 he was assigned the task of organizing the South American branches of his father’s company; in 1830 his brother Henri Gustave emigrated to Peru and was from then on in charge of these businesses. Henri Grandjean trained as a watchmaker in his home town. Around 1830 his factory "Henri Grandjean & Cie." began to build ship’s chronometers that were modelled on the English chronometers. His business partner was Edouard Thévenaz; together with Louis Jean Richard and Ulysse Nardin Grandjean was the originator of the Swiss marine chronometer production. In 1831 Grandjean married Elise Montandon, the daughter of Isaac Pierre. He was granted permission to open watchmaking schools and founded the observatory at Neuchâtel. Later Grandjean went into politics and became representative and prefect of the city of Le Locle. In La-Chaux-de-Fonds he worked for the establishment of the Quartier-Neuf, which was finally built in 1855; his intention was to eliminate real estate speculation and to create low priced housing for working-class families. William Ilbery - A very fine, heavy pair-cased gold pocket watch in museum-like quality, with quarter hour/hour strike and centre seconds for the Chinese market Movm. No. 6244, Dimensions 60 mm, circa 1806, Weight 222 g, Origin England Case: Outer and inner case made of 18 K gold, engraved and pierced around the edge, outer case with case maker punch mark "WM", inner case with rear bell. Dial: Enamel, heart-shaped gold hands. Movm.: Full plate movement, gilt, chain/fusee, 2 hammers, open barrel, duplex escapement, chronometer balance with 3 weights and 3 screws, chatoned diamond endstone on balance. This magnificent well preserved watch weighs in at a remarkable 222 g. The bezel of the outer case features exquisite floral engraving. The décor is repeated on the back with some openwork on the edges for better sound of the striking mechanism. A wonderful engraved flower ornament graces the centre. The inner case features similar decoration with an openwork edge ornamented with ribbons and floral elements. The back has a finely engraved sun in the centre. The off-white enamel dial is flawless. The movement starts up right away and the strike is full and pleasant. William Ilbery (circa 1760-1839) began working in London's Goswell Street in 1780 and moved to Duncan Terrace later. Influenced by the examples of James Cox in London and Pierre Jaquet-Droz in Switzerland, Ilbery specialized in producing luxury watches for the Chinese Market. At first he very much adhered to the traditional English style with its full plate movement and single-wheel duplex escapement, although he used a spring detent escapement for his highest quality pieces. For later movements Ilbery took his inspiration from the Lepine caliber with free-standing barrel, as did Jaquet-Droz with the watches he signed in London and William Anthony in London. Ilbery had the cases of his watches exquisitely decorated by the best enamellers from Geneva such as Jean-Francois-Victor Dupont, who usually signed his work, or Jean-Louis Richter, who signed only very infrequently. William Ilbery initiated the production of opulently engraved movements for the Asian market in Fleurier in Switzerland; other makers in Fleurier such as Bovet and Juvet followed his example. Ilbery should therefore be considered one of the most renowned makers of the so-called "Chinese watches". Although he worked mainly in London, Ilbery kept in close contact with the trade in other countries; a watch signed "Ilbery Paris" is known and Ilbery & Son were recorded in London and Fleurier as well as in Canton. Markwick Markham, Perigal - (*) A magnificent London gold enamel verge pocket watch in a triple case for the Ottoman market Movm. No. 21808, Case No. 21808, Dimensions 51 mm, circa 1810, Weight 100 g, Origin England Case: 18 K gold, polychrome enamel, glazed, diamond thumb piece, case maker’s mark "IK". Dial: Enamel. Movm.: Full plate movement, chain/fusee, three-arm steel balance. Both outer and intermediate case have curved edges and are ornamented with opaque and translucent Champlevé enamel flowers on the in- and outside. The intermediate case is also ornamented with engraved four-colour gold flower tendrils as well as an exquisite enamel medallion with the polychrome painting of a bouquet of summer flowers against a translucent red guilloche background. The movement as well as case design of these watches intended for the Turkish market were already outmoded around 1810 - and even more so in later years; nevertheless Edward Prior and some of his contemporaries such as George Prior (II), George Charle, Markwick Markham-Perigal and Isaac Rogers specialized on this type of watch because there was a ongoing demand for them on the Turkish market - be it from tradition or from a true love of the elaborately ornamented movements and cases. It is quite possible that many of these watches - the one we have here is among them - never even left England, because their exotic beauty had its devotees in their own country too. Very often these buyers kept the watch safely in a drawer like jewellery, which explains the excellent condition of some of these marvellous pieces - as it is the case with our watch. Markwick Markham & Perigal The trading name of Markwick Markham became famous for watches destined for the Turkish market. Not only did this notoriety encourage the appearance of spuriously signed watches, but at the end of the century Markham, or his successor, associated the names of other watchmakers with their own products intended for the East. The makers thus found associated are: Francis Perigal, Peter Upjohn, H. Story, Borrell, John Johnson, Louis Recordon, Dupont. All were reputable watch-makers in their own right, selling other products under their own names. Case: very good, micro scratches. Dial: very good. Movm.: very good, capable of running, cleaning recommended.

Dimensions 63 x 34 mm, circa 1570, Weight 282 g, Origin Deutschland Case: Bronze, remains of firegilding, pierced and lavishly florally ornamented, rear bell. Dial: Silver, radial Roman numerals "I-XII" and Arabic numerals "13-24", applied hour knobs for time reading by night, engraved compas rose in the centre, single iron hand. Movm.: Brass full plate movement, firegilt, maker's mark: "EE" within a shield, 2 open barrels, 1 hammer, iron trains, verge escapement, locking plate with internal teeth, solid movement pillars, stackfreed, foliot and hog's bristle regulator. This fine timepiece of museum quality is in virtually untouched original condition. The minor repairs carried out over time are negligible. The openwork case is decorated with flower motifs. On the back the flowers grow from a vase. The front lid has the appearance of a gothic-style rose window and reveals the hours on the dial. A bulging openwork edge decorated with ornamental ribbons creates a soundhole for the hour strike. This fob watch was illustrated and described in detail by Gustav Speckhart of Nuremberg on pages 21-22 of the Deutsche Uhrmacher-Zeitung (German watch- and clockmaker’s magazine), No. 2, 1914. Speckhart attributes this watch with the master's mark "EE" on the back plate to the father of important Nuremberg watchmaker Mainhart Eysler, who gave up his citizenship of Nuremberg in 1572. The name Eysler (Eisler, Eißler, Eiisler) can be traced back to almost the mid 15th century among the names of goldsmiths, silversmiths, watch and clockmakers, sculptors and similar craftsmen of Nuremberg. Eysler is one of the most outstanding among those masters who, after Henlein's death, were responsible for the great reputation of Nuremberg watchmaking. Abraham Arlaud I. zugeschr./attr. to - (*) An early, oval, one-handed pre-balance neck watch made for the Ottoman Empire Dimensions 48 x 63 mm, circa 1660, Weight 113 g, Origin Schweiz Case: Silver, turning ball-shaped pendant. Dial: Gilt brass and silver, engraved arabesques, applied silver chapter ring with engraved Ottoman numerals, single, precision-cut gilt brass hand. Movm.: Oval full plate movement with engraved arabesque scrollwork, cartouche with Arabic signature "Arlaud", gut/fusee, verge escapement, plain two-arm iron balance without balance spring, fine florally engraved, pierced balance cock, decorated in Persian style. This watch was evidently made in Geneva, as indicated by several clues such as the extreme sophistication of the movement the Geneva makers were famous for, which also has elements that are commonly used in Geneva timepieces, such as the unusual pillars, the distictive finish of the wheels and the fusee as well as the form of the cock. Although this timepiece was obviously intended for the Ottoman market it does not have the typical characteristics of Turkish watches, which presumably means that it was produced for a general market. Another watch with an almost identical movement, signed by Arlaud and produced for the Islamic market was part of the Sandberg Collection and is described on pages 228-229 of the book on the collection. Case: very good, dents. Dial: very good. Movm.: very good, capable of running, cleaning recommended.

It comes from the original book "Devises et emblemes" by Daniel de la Feuille from 1691 and bears the title "Un Cœur enlevé par les Ailes" (A heart carried away by wings). The inner frames of the rock crystal covers are also lavishly embellished. Another rock crystal pendant watch made by Du Val is exhibited in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; it was originally part of the J. Pierpont Morgan Collection, before it was donated to the museum in 1917. Jean Gaspard Duval or Du Val was a watchmaker who was presumably born circa 1600. It is not known where he lived. Dial: Front: enamel, Persian inscribed graduations, signature "Frédéric Houriet" in Persian characters, blued steel hand. Detachable reverse: silvered, engraved, Persian inscribed compass rose. Movm.: Full plate movement, large u-shaped bimetallic spring. This is the only known compass and thermometer known to us that was made by Houriet for the Persian market. Jacques-Frédéric Houriet was born on February 25th, 1748 in La Chaux d'Abel, which is located near La Ferrière. From 1759 to 1768 he apprenticed and worked in Paris for Julien le Roy, Pierre le Roy and Ferdinand Berthoud. While working for Berthoud he collaborated with Ferdinands nephew, (Pierre) Louis Berthoud. During his time in Paris he formed friendships with Abraham Louis Breguet, Jean Romilly, Antide Janvier and Louis Recordon. After his years of study in the capital of France he returned to Switzerland to establish himself in Le Locle. At first he worked together with his brother and his two sisters. A short while after he became business partners with David Courvoisier, who at the time was the head of the firm Courvoisier & Films. In 1797 Urban Jürgensen became his employee. A few years later Jürgensen married Houriets daughter, Sophie-Henriette. In 1919, at the age of 75, Houriet decided to continue working alone. He only manufactured pocket chronometers and custom-made items. Despite his old age he carried on with research and experiments on the foundation of isochronism, temperature compensation and the effects of magnetism of chronometers. This is how golden, or more specifically spheric hair springs emerge, which appear in the form of an orb or a spheroid. Jacques- Houriet is considered the founder of Swiss chronometry. He was a member of the Paris Academy of Sciences and honorary member of the Genevan Society of Arts. Jacques-Frédéric Houriet died on January 12th, 1830. Source: watch-wiki. Julien Le Roy - An ornamental Parisian verge pocket watch with quarter repeater in a three-colour gold case Movm. No. 3754, Dimensions 45 mm, circa 1760, Weight 93 g, Origin Frankreich Case: 18 K gold, "à trois couleurs", lavishly ornamented, rear bell. Dial: Enamel, the dial plate engraved with the inscription: "Inventé par Jul. Le Roy / en 1740 et Le Rouage en 1755". Movm.: Full plate movement, chain/fusee, 2 hammers, three-arm steel balance, engraved and pierced balance bridge showing initals "J.L.R.". The back is ornamented with a flower-filled vase inside a laurel wreath under a bow. The openwork edge ensures a strong sound for the quarter repeater. The repeater is released by pressing down the pendant. The insciption "Inventé par Julien Le Roy en 1740" refers to the so-called "à bâte levée", which is a novel arrangement invented by Julien Le Roy, that leaves more space for the repeater mechanism than usual. This invention was soon adopted by most makers. The date 1755 refers to the invention of the "All or nothing" safety device for repeater mechanisms (see Ch. Allix and G. Brusa : Antiquarian Horology, June 1972). Julien Le Roy (1686-1759) was one of the most outstanding clock- and watchmakers of his time and certainly played a decisive part in establishing the leading role French clockmaking had in the 18th century. He became a master in 1713, presented an equation clock to the Académie Royale des Sciences in 1717, and was appointed clockmaker to the king in 1739 (with his own rooms at the Louvre). Le Roy invented the adjustable bracket for the verge escapement wheel ("potence"), the repetition strike on springs instead of bells for pocket watches, and the "all-or-nothing" piece for repeating watches. His inventions and improvements were of such extreme importance that most watchmakers adopted them promptly for their own pieces. Later Le Roy was director of the Société des Arts; he and his son supplied the entries on watches and clocks in the encyclopaedia compiled by Diderot and d'Alembert. His son Pierre Le Roy (1717-1785) was a French clockmaker. He was the inventor of the detent escapement, the temperature-compensated balance and the isochronous balance spring. His developments are considered as the foundation of the modern precision clock. Case: very good, rubbed. Dial: very good, slightly chipped. Pahlow/B. Haas Jeune & Co. - A collection of 6 pocket watches An intricate and rare minute repeating hunting case pocket watch movement in a later silver case with cover wind mechanism and full calendar Movm. No. 15598, Case No. 15598, Dimensions 58 mm, circa 1880/2010, Weight 209 g, Origin Deutschland/Schweiz Case: Silver, glazed on both sides. Dial: Front side: enamel, auxiliary seconds at "9", moon phase at "3". Back side: outer enamel chapter ring with day and date indicator, eccentric dial for month indicator. Movm.: Bridge movement, 2 hammers, 2 gongs, club-tooth lever escapement, screw compensation balance. English patent No. 3945 of December 2, 1873 was granted to Benjamin Haas for the development of a novel and unusual winding mechanism, which used the energy that is generated when the front cover of the watch is closed. Haas improved the original idea further and his watch possesses a well-developed system with a 36-hour power reserve (generated by twelve closings). Haas changed the going train by adding an additional wheel so that a single closing was able to achieve three hours' winding. He also invented a safety device which disengaged the mechanism when fully wound and thus prevented any damage to the cover. In his book "Das klassische Taschenuhrgehäuse" (classic pocket watch cases) Steffen Pahlow (1941-2023), a self-taught Tourbillon maker, gave a fine explanation of pocket watch case making. The book describes his insights from his practical work and is a useful addition to the small supply of technical literature on the subject. He describes a possible way to get started with case-making from a self-taught perspective. This timepiece is a good example of his work. Case: as new. Dial: hairlines. Movm.: very good, capable of running, cleaning needed.

Angelus Watch & Co. - A very attractive and rare, antimagnetic vintage pilot's chronograph with 45 min. counter and tachy scale Dimensions 35 mm, circa 1950, Origin Schweiz Case: Chrome-plated, steel push back, rectangular chronograph pushers. Dial: Black. Movm.: Manual. This pilot's chronograph comes with long, gently curved lugs and a narrow bezel. Despite its age it is in excellent condition with sharp edges and a beautiful glossy black dial with golden markings and golden luminous hands, which have acquired a fine patina. It also features an outer tachymeter scale to take measurements of speed. Angelus was founded by the brothers Stolz in 1891 in Le Locle. They produced interesting timepieces right from the beginning and the quality of the company’s pocket watch and repeater movements was officially recognised with an award at a Swiss national exhibition in 1914. The Stolz brothers also soon started producing wristwatches, particularly chronographs. Even today the name Angelus is mainly associated with these stopwatches. The company designed their own calibres to develop the complications for their watches, such as the Chronodato, which was the first chronograph with calendar function in mass production worldwide. In the late 1970s the company became a victim of the quartz crisis. Today it is only the large "Angelus" lettering on the old company building in Le Locle that recalls this maker of fine chronographs. Case: very good. Dial: very good.
