The extract from the archives that comes with the watch shows that the watch was created in 1914 and sold on January 11, 1916. The back is engraved with: "Awarded the Grand Prix, Panama-Pacific, International Exposition, 1915, S.F.W. to O.P.W., 25. December 1915". The Panama-Pacific International Exposition was an international fair in San Francisco, California from February 20, to December 4, 1915. The celebration commemorated the completion of the Panama Canal a year earlier. Simultaneously the city of San Francisco wanted to illustrate the fact that it had fully recovered from the 1906 earth quake. The fair was constructed on a 636 acre site along the northern shore of the city. The fair attraczed 18.9 million visitors. The Panama Pacific International Exposition surpassed the standards of previous fairs and world exhibitions in many aspects. The event managed to exude the charme of a "state fair" with a variety of different awards and tributes. Many years later product labels and posters still celebrated the success of countless businesses, state and national institutions as well as the individual efforts delivered during the fair. The main exhibition edifices were dedicated to different topics such as food production, education, social economy, agriculture, transportation, industry, mining, metallurgy and the arts. Even though WWI was raging, several European countries attended the fair, such as Italy, France and Switzerland who exhibited at the Palace of Varied Industries.

A very fine, extraordinary, octagonal vintage Geneva wristwatch with onyx dial
Movm. No. 1360082, Ref. 3631, Cal. 177, Case No. 2757567, Dimensions 34 x 34 mm, circa 1977, Origin Schweiz, gold original clasp

Only the most skilled artist can handle the challenge to create such a wafer-thin dial from a precious stone. These are very fragile and often suffers fractures or fissures over time. This is why an immaculate dial increases the value of such a timepiece considerably. Apart from two lines of text at 12 o’clock and the small letters 'SWISS' at the bottom edge of the dial the dial is completely blank. The yellow gold dauphine hands match the case of the watch. The watch features a lustrous deep black onyx dial fitted in an 18 K yellow gold case with stepped bezel and concealed lugs. The winding crown is adorned with a small onyx cabochon. The watch is powered by manual-wind calibre 177 with Geneva seal.

Case: Gold-plated, steel push back.
Dial: Silvered, missing luminous dots.
Movm.: Manual.
The Wakmann Watch Co. was founded in 1946 by Icko Wakmann in New York and imported several high-quality watch brands for the North American market, the most famous of them being Breitling timepieces. Wakmann had formed a partnership with Breitling in 1947 and imported their cockpit clocks for the American military as well as for civil aviation. After World War II, Wakmann began producing their own watches in parallel to the sales and distribution business; they were also supplied with watches by the Swiss company Charles Gigandet S.A. in Tramelan. Wakmann sold only a few watches with double signatures. Manual-wound chronographs are popular timepices that are still highly coveted by collectors because of their beautiful design and the outstanding movements used. This wrist chronograph is an excellent choice for lovers of fine vintage timepieces not only due to its modern size but also because of the attractive panda dial. The panda dial is remarkable with its distinctive colour scheme. Black subdials on white ground are reminiscent of the face of a panda and lends the watch a timeless, elegant look. What is more, this timepiece is not only beautiful to look at but also technically appealing. The chronograph functions such as stopwatch and tachymeter scale make this the perfect watch for sports enthusiasts or indeed, anyone interested in timekeeping. The combination of vintage beauty and modern functionality make this timepiece an authentic and multifunctional accessory for any occasion.
